Discover every corner of the district using off road tracks, quiet country lanes and the occasional stretch of normal road. Routes include Hemsworth, Darrington, Walton & Wintersett and Newmillerdam. Some range from 20 miles like the Parks & Villages route, to 10 miles or less around Upton & Badsworth, Stanley Ferry & Carr Gate or Ossett, Wrenthorpe and Kirkhamgate.

Newmillerdam is ideal for short walks, with the lakeside path suitable for wheelchairs, booster scooters and pushchairs but also offering longer rambles in the surrounding woods. Choose from three different walks based around Pugneys, or discover the attractive commonland around Heath.
For walks across open countryside try Ackworth or four different options on the Waterton Trail. with fascinating information on the life of the pionerring naturalist Charles Waterton, For nature lovers there is the Southern Washlands nature corridor.

The Trans Pennine Trail is a cycling, walking and horse riding route linking the North and Irish seas across the Pennines. Join the route at Bottom Boat or Stanley Ferry marina. From here it skirts Wakefield, passing through Heath, Anglers Country Park and the scenic Barnsley Canal.
