Workshop with Shavnabada at Wakefield
A unique opportunity to learn Georgian polyphonic singing with the master Davit Tsinstsdaze the artistic director of Shavnabada – a young and passionate Male Voice Choir touring the UK and spending 1 week in Wakefield.
Shavnabada are a 12 strong male voice choir whose passions lie in resurrecting Monastery and Folk Music that had all but disappeared from Georgian culture as a result of Georgia being part of the Soviet Union. Under the Soviets much of the music was banned but did however remain in the conscious memories of singing families across the country. Georgian Polyphony is an ancient oral tradition with its own unique musical scales handed down through generations and learned by ear. Indeed, the finely tuned Georgian ear often cannot hear or sing an individual harmony line out of relatedness.
David Tsintsadze the artistic director and inspiration behind the choir has made it his life’s work to find, record and film examples of traditional Georgian singing in order to preserve, resurrect, sing and celebrate it across the country and across the world. Shavnabada have been schooled by the great Anzor Erkomaishvili, who founded the Rustavi Ensemble, and it is within this spirit that Shavnabada now perform and teach otherwise previously unheard Georgian folk and church music.
The workshop will take place over 2 1/2 hours and song sheets (without notation) will be provided. You do not need to be a professional singer… just someone passionate about singing.
