Castle Magazine

From medieval times through to the English Civil War period the 11th century cellars, below Pontefract Castle were used as a magazine chamber.

Visitors can visit the underground magazine, cut out of solid rock and see where Civil War prisoners carved their names into the cell walls.

Groups can tour the magazine by prior arrangement by phoning 01977 722740.

Please Note: There are steep steps and sensible footware is advised.

The Summer opening hours for Pontefract Castle are:
Monday - Friday, 08.30 – 17.00
Saturday - Sunday, 09.30 – 18.15

Please note that the opening hours change when British Summer Time begins and ends.

The Winter opening hours for Pontefract Castle are:
Monday - Friday, 08:30 until 16:15
Saturday - Sunday, 09:30 until 16:15

The Visitors Centre and Shop is open Wednesday to Sunday 11.00 – 15.00 (Mon and Tue by request)
