Details

Get kitted out with a hard hat and battery lamp, step into the cage and descend 140 metres underground into the dark depths of one of the oldest coalmines in Britain. The National Coal Mining Museum for England is a unique day out; above and below ground, rain or shine, there is always something exciting to see and do.

Choose from a choice of two underground tours; Meet the Miner and Go Mining!

The Meet the Miner tour takes visitors on a journey back through time to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a working coalmine. Discover what life was like for the men, women and children who toiled underground in the early days of mining and how new machinery methods and inventions changed the shape of mining through the ages.

Pit Ponies played an important part in the history of mining, and a highlight of the new family-friendly Go Mining! interactive tour is a visit to the stables. Find out how horses were kept underground and have a go at putting on the pony’s bridle, feeding and mucking out.

When you surface make sure you pay a visit to the pit ponies who now enjoy their retirement and relax in the stables above ground.

Above ground explore original colliery buildings such as the 1876 steam winder, the medical centre where miners’ injuries were treated and the pithead baths where they cleaned up at the end of every shift. Get closer to the heart of the mining communities in some of the fascinating gallery exhibitions and learn about how miners used to live, work and relax from the Victorians through to the modern day miner.

Visitors will be asked to leave a £3 deposit for a traditional miners ‘check’ when booking on the underground tour. After the tour visitors can either return the check and the £3 will be refunded or visitors can keep the check as a souvenir. The money will be put towards the Museum and the upkeep of the underground tour.

Please note: We regret that under 5s are not able to go underground.
