Tony Kofi's Ornette Coleman Project at Wakefield Jazz Club
Music - Jazz, Fri 2 Dec 2016
Wakefield Sports Club (College Grove),
Tony Kofi has been involved with many world class jazz projects led by others over the years – eg The World Saxophone Quartet. Here he has put together a project (why not done already?) which draws inspiration from one of the game changers of the last century, Ornette Coleman. In addition to his forays into free jazz Ornette was a composer of really good tunes some of which have become jazz standards. Humpty Dumpty and Lonely Woman are two notable examples. Tony had the opportunity to work with Ornette Coleman during his tours with Jamaladeen Tacuma playing Coleman material. He particularly admires Ornette’s giving of his entire self to any performance and hopes to emulate this himself.
The band he has put together for this tour is composed entirely of other band-leaders who have been deeply influenced by Ornette Coleman’s style and commitment. Expect the highest quality music played with ultimate involvement by all musicians.
Tony Kofi - tenor and alto sax
Byron Wallen - trumpet
Larry Bartley - bass
Rod Youngs - drums
