Referencing JW Anderson’s collection and the art works in our exhibition Disobedient Bodies, JW Anderson curates The Hepworth Wakefield, this creative writing workshop focuses on creating original characters, exploring the ways in which people form and represent identities and values through their clothing.

Using different techniques, prompts and props inspired by the exhibition, you will take part in a range of writing exercises led by writer and performer Becky Cherriman. Through the workshop you will create your own original characters and reflect on themes of gender and rebellion.

About the Tutor:

Acclaimed writer, performer and facilitator Becky Cherriman is currently performing her new work Corseted, a poetic one-woman show about political awakening, fashion and non-conformism.

Cherriman works regularly for a number of key organisations and charities, and facilitates Ilkley Young Writers and Bradford Young Writers alongside poet and performer Michelle Scally Clarke for the Ilkley Literature Festival.

Her writing has been published by Bloodaxe, Mslexia, New Walk, Envoi, Mother’s Milk and in Poets For Corbyn among others publications. She has had pieces commissioned by The Hepworth Wakefield, The Rotunda Museum, Humbermouth Literature Festival, Imove, Grassington Festival and most recently by Beam for Altofts Festival In A Day.

Becky has won several prizes for her poetry including first prize for The Speakeasy Open, second prize in the Ilkley Literature Open Mic and runner up in the Yorkshire Open. Her work has been shortlisted in several international competitions including The Fish Short Story Prize. In 2013 she was the commissioned poet for Morley Literature Festival and Grassington Festival.

She is currently working on both a magical realist novel and Alice In Bloomers, a one woman show and costume exhibition inspired by suffragist Alice Cliff Scatcherd (1842-1906).
