Details

2017 marks 60 years since Fairburn Ings was first designated a nature reserve, thanks to the campaigning efforts of local people. As part of the anniversary celebrations this summer volunteer ranger Chris will be leading a series of walks to unravel the history of the site and discover how this man-made landscape was formed, before it was taken over by nature once more.

From the Coal Face to a Wild Place looks at how the Ings has always been important in the local community, how it was forged by mining and now acts as a flood plain to protect local homes and businesses.

We would love to hear your memories about the reserve and why it is important to you.

The walk will last approximately 2 hours, please let us know your access needs at booking so we can tailor the walk.

Please book in advance where possible, children must be accompanied by an adult

These walks form part of a larger 60th anniversary project. Throughout the spring and summer we will be asking you to share your memories of Fairburn – from mining days through to an afternoon spent pond dipping. Four of these memories will be picked and displayed permanently on a new Coal Tips installation to mark the occasion.
