Castle, free entry
This year Pontefract Castle will be a hive of activity on a scale not seen since its demolition in 1649. Having been awarded a substantial grant from Heritage Lottery Fund, conservation work has already begun to improve and preserve the site for future generations.
Improvements will include a brand new visitor centre incorporating an exhibition space, learning zone and a fab new café that will be perfect for reflecting on your visit with a slice of cake and a drink.
But the improvements don’t stop there! Pontefract Castle will be launching its very own dedicated website. Look out for the launch this summer!
Pontefract Castle will remain open throughout the works providing the rare opportunity to see conservation as it happens. Watch conservation experts carefully preserve the ruins of the castle and see for yourself how the 19th century barn building is transformed from the old blacksmith’s workshop into the new visitor centre.
Have you ever imagined what it was like to live in a medieval castle? Step back in time and see the castle spring to life at the Living History Days, enjoy live re-enactments and music, traditional games and watch specialist craftspeople demonstrate the skills needed to build and run a medieval castle.
Dig a little deeper into the castle’s history and become an archaeologist for the day. You can play an important part in the conservation of the castle, examine some of the excavation samples from around the site and see what you can discover about the castle’s hidden past at selected events throughout the year.
