Details

Wakefield has a unique skyline. Seen from the motorway or railway as you approach the city, you can easily see the spires and towers of the Cathedral, Town Hall, County Hall and St John’s Church. But walk around the city centre and you will see many more buildings with architectural embellishments designed to attract the eye and demonstrate the wealth and importance of the people or organisation associated with their original commission. More recently, developers have been encouraged to include towers and turrets in their new buildings.

The Society has produced a booklet that enables you to walk around the city centre and learn more of some 30 or so of our buildings that boast a spire, tower or turret. Based on a series of articles that were written by Kate Taylor for The Wakefield Express and research conducted by John Goodchild, the booklet is available for £1 from Wakefield Tourist Information Office in the Bull Ring or from Mocca Moocho cafe in Cross Square.

Copies are also available from the Society – please send a cheque for £1.50 per copy made payable to the Society to Wakefield Civic Society, PO Box 380, Wakefield, WF1 3WT

Wakefield Civic Society can provide guided walks of the city centre to organised groups. The duration and route of each walk can be tailored to meet the needs of your group but we suggest a minimum of around two hours as a starting point and a limit on group numbers of approximately 20 people.

The Society is registered charity (number 236034) and walks will be provided by volunteer members of the Society’s committee in return for a donation to the Society’s funds. For more information, please email info@wakefieldcivicsociety.org.uk or telephone 07967 516841

The Society also provides guided walks from time to time throughout the year – please see our Events Programme website page at http://www.wakefieldcivicsociety.org.uk/?c=p/events/

Talks and Social Events

From September through to March, and occasionally at other times of the year, the Society presents a programme of talks and social events. These are open to members and non-members and talks are usually free of charge. You can request a copy of our programme by emailing info@wakefieldcivicsociety.org.uk or by visiting our Events Programme website page at http://www.wakefieldcivicsociety.org.uk/?c=p/events/
