Details

To celebrate Wakefield Pride and to mark the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminilisation of homosexuality in England and Wales the Rainbow Trail reveals some of Wakefield’s often hidden LGBT+ histories.

A number of objects feature in the main galleries at Wakefield Museum, visitors will be offered a trail guide, designed by artist Liz Kay, and invited to spot rainbows highlighting these.

Objects include Pride paraphenalia, a prison door, a drag outfit and the Vesta Tilley plaque.

There will also be objects in the Library and a selection of LGBT+ books will be available to borrow.

In Create Café a set of 6 portraits have been commissioned illustrating LGBT+ icons who are from Wakefield or linked to Wakefield. A set of postcards of the portraits will be available to take away.

The atrium cases at Wakefield One are also included in the trail. The upper cases will be filled with balloons (one case in the rainbow flag colours, the other in the trans-gender flag colours) - these will be displayed for about a month. The lower atrium case will contain an installation celebrating LGBT+ music stars and their influence on society.
