Doorstep Discoveries

Welcome to Doorstep Discoveries. It’s summer! While that means something very different than last year, there’s no need to be glum. These pages are chock full of top tips on having fun at home, as well as bringing you the great outdoors - Wakefield style.

There's a guide to hosting your own beach party, wonderful walking (and cycle!) routes, crafty creations aplenty, and mindful colouring to help you relax.

What about the kids? No problem. Littlest ones will love our nature spotting activity and having ago at our Summer Olympics at home. Older children can make their own postcard, or take part in Wakefield Museums and Castles’ Treasure Hunt Challenge. For quieter moments, why not snuggle up for Wakefield Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge?

If you live in the Wakefield District, you'll soon be receiving your very own copy of Doorstep Discoveries in the post. If not, you can download a copy of your own from the link to the right.

Enjoy your summer!

Please note, that while we are working hard to keep information on this website up to date, things are changing rapidly. Experiences may be a little different and pre-booking may be required. Please check venue websites or get in touch with them directly before travelling.
Have Fun

It's time for fun! We've all had a very hard few months, and there's nothing we all need more than some inspiration to kick back, laugh and enjoy ourselves. And we've got some marvellous ideas to help you do just that.

Host your own summer beach party (no matter how far you are from the ocean waves), go on a treasure hunt at home, hold the Summer Olympics in your back garden and find out about 50 Things to do Before You're 5 (or even after you're five - let's be honest, who doesn't love crunching through forest leaves?).

Explore

It's a big, beautiful world out there, so let's get exploring!

There are so many places to experience and enjoy in the Wakefield District, and we've got pages and pages to help you discover what's right on your doorstep (geddit?).

There are wonderful walking trails and super cycling routes, as well as details on where to find beautiful butterflies, and a nifty nature spotter's guide. We've even got a wild wordsearch for those rainy days when you just can't get out and about!

Get Active

Spending extra time at home can mean you're moving less, and may be struggling with motivation to keep active.

We've got some great ideas to get you moving with our Exercise At Home feature - including some simple mobility tips you can do while sitting on the sofa!

If you want to get out and about we've rounded up a whole host of walking and cycling routes for you to enjoy, plus Aspire Wakefield have got loads of tips on keeping active during lockdown - including live classes over Facebook.

So get warmed up and get started!

Create

We've all wanted to get creative to keep ourselves busy recently, whether it's redecorating the house, sewing scrubs and face coverings, or designing rainbows to display in the window.

If you fancy doing something else creative, we've got suggestions, inspiration and ideas galore to get you started. Maybe you fancy creating something that will help entice wildlife to visit your garden? Or maybe you want to keep little ones busy before they start redecorating your walls themselves!

Get inspired and get creative!

Relax

Life can leave you feeling like there's no time for truly switching off and relaxing, or when you do find the time you just don't know what to do.

Fear not, as we have a few suggestions to help you keep calm and get you back to feeling more yourself again.

From online reading resources from Wakefield Libraries, to mindful colouring in with Wakefield Museums and even some relaxation breathing techniques, it's time to take a break, get comfortable and relax.
