Castleford Roman Festival returns!

This year's festival take place in Castleford town centre on Saturday 1st June from 10am - 4pm.

Celebrate the town’s rich Roman history and heritage with a range of free and fun activities.

Did you know that Castleford is built on a Roman army settlement called Lagentium? To find out more about Castleford's rich Roman history, click the image to the right.

Visit the Roman activity stalls! Featuring military and officers display, domestic ‘Domina’ or female run household set-up, blacksmith, basket weaving, carpentry and pottery.

BEES! The Colony

Bee Hives
Wander amongst the honey-perfumed Bee Colony finding a variety ways of viewing and interacting with the contents of the impossible Bee Hives. In each there is a surprising twist and one of these hives will be designed by the artist to be Roman themed.

Visit the petting farm with goats, lambs, sheep, pigs, rabbits and chickens.

Queen's Mill

Queen's Mill

Meet members of the Comitatus historical group. Look at gladiator equipment and Roman medical tools.

Take part in Roman themed crafts including clay and weaving.

Hear traditional tales from Roman times.

Handle some Roman pottery and take part in our dig activity.

Food and drink available from the community kitchen.

Free entry. Fancy dress encouraged. 10am - 3pm
