Food & Drink

In the Middle Ages, Wakefield was known as the “Merrie City” because our food and drink was good and plentiful - and not much has changed!

Looking for Great British dining with a modern twist? You’ll love Iris. Or maybe you’d like to go further afield - Qubana’s Spanish and South American tapas or Tết’s contemporary Vietnamese and Thai cuisine are sure to delight.
In fact, there’s a whole world of flavours right here in the Wakefield district.

Perhaps you want a light bite. No problem. Had a busy morning in the city centre? Pop into Create and unwind. Enjoying a leisurely stroll around the independent shops in Castleford? Top it off with a cuppa and a natter at Queen’s Mill Tearooms. Looking for authentic, farm-to-fork goodness? Try Farmer Copleys' Moo Cafe, or The Barn at Blacker Hall Farm.

And that’s not all. We’re home to not one, but two food festivals. Every February, Wakefield kicks off the year with the Rhubarb Festival, a tribute to the divisive pink vegetable and a love-letter to the best of the district’s fresh, local produce. Then in summer, it’s Pontefract’s turn to go loopy for all things sweet at the Liquorice Festival.

So what are you waiting for? Pay us a visit - and eat, drink and be merrie.

When it comes to world-class restaurants, you're spoilt for choice in the Wakefield district.

From the modern styling of sushi and teppanyaki restaurant Hokkaido to the sumptuously grand interiors and modern British fare at Wentbridge House's Fleur De Lys, we've got whatever you fancy.

Oh, and if you really can't make up your mind what you want, pop along to Festive Fusion - they've got the lot!

Did someone say coffee and cake? How about afternoon tea? Or do you fancy a warming hot chocolate with all the trimmings?

When it comes to café culture, Wakefield's got it. In fact, we’ll even reward you for it - pick up your loyalty card and use it at The Boat House Café (at Pugneys Country Park), The Liquorice Café (at Pontefract Castle) and The Woodland Café (at Anglers Country Park). Free cake? Yes please!

Pubs and Bars

Good food's not complete without good drink! Luckily, there's plenty of it in the district, from locally-brewed real ale at Fernandes Brewery Tap & Bier Keller and The Jolly Tap to quirky cocktails at Now Serving.

And from city centre sophistication at The Establishment to the cosy, traditional charms of Newmillerdam's The Fox and Hounds, you're sure to find your new "local" - however far you've come from!
