Wakefield is the centre for sculpture.

Did you know that two of the greatest artists of the 20th century were born and bred here? Barbara Hepworth in Wakefield and Henry Moore in Castleford.

Our two museums dedicated to this art form, The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, have both won the Art Fund 'Museum of the Year' award – the world's biggest museum prize, and we're the only city outside of London to have two winners.

The Wakefield district has a rich cultural history.

Dig deep and discover the history of coal mining in our district while you explore life as a miner at the National Coal Mining Museum for England and see a real Ancient Egyptian mummy at Wakefield Museum.

Discover some of the history of our city and towns at Wakefield, Castleford and Pontefract Museums, imagine yourself as the king or queen of Pontefract Castle or marvel at the tallest church spire in Yorkshire at Wakefield Cathedral.

Wakefield loves good food and drink.

Whether you’re after afternoon tea in cosy cafes, exciting fusion and innovative city centre cuisine, or the wholesome flavours of field to fork, we’ve got it in spades.

Love beer? Us too. We’re proud to have a commitment to real ale, with a growing community of small, local breweries producing a slew of show-stopping flavours.

It's a big, beautiful world out there, so let's get exploring!

There are so many places to experience and enjoy in the Wakefield District, and we've got loads of ideas to help you discover what's right on your doorstep.
