Details
Get kitted out with your hard hat and battery lamp then step into the cage to descend 140m underground to discover the harsh realities of coal mining through the centuries.
Led by one of the lively former miner guides, the ‘Meet a Miner’ tour will take you on a journey through time to discover the different ages of mining, from Victorian times where women and children worked underground alongside men, through to pit ponies and modern machinery.
Hear all about your guide’s working life and experiences in the mines. What’s more, the displays on this underground tour were recently updated as part of the Making Sense of Mining development project – see if you can guess which display is modelled on your guide.
The underground tours are subject to availability, please ask at the Museum’s main reception on the day or phone 01924 848806 for daily tour times.
In line with health and safety regulations, the Museum is required to keep a register of visitors entering and leaving the underground areas of the Museum site. This is being done by using the traditional system of ‘mine checks’.
If you are going on an underground tour, you will be asked to purchase a ‘check’ for the refundable cost of £5.00. This enables the museum to track who is underground at any given time.
If you decide to keep your check as a souvenir of your visit, your £5.00 will be used to contribute to the running of the Museum and the upkeep of the underground tour.
