Details

11th November 2018 marks a hundred years since the end of the First World War.

Visit Wakefield Museum to engage with a few of our small displays telling the stories of local people who were affected by the war:

George Kellett’s Diary
In 1917 George Kellett from Sandal received the diary as a Christmas present whilst he was serving in Northern France. It is a fascinating insight into his life in the trenches from the daily routine to going over the top.
The diary has its own twitter account and you can follow it @WW1_Diary. Tweets go out on the same calendar days as he wrote them.

Arthur Cox
Arthur Cox, of Thornes Road, was a Sergeant with the Royal Field Artillery. He received the Military Medal for bravery in the field, but sadly died in action on 29th July 1917.
He also served in South Africa in 1901-1902 during the Second Boer War as part of a volunteer regiment and became an honorary Freeman of the city of Wakefield in recognition of this service.

Marion Walker’s autograph book
Marion Walker was a nurse at the White Rose Auxiliary Hospital at Heath Hall in Wakefield. She carried an autograph book when attending to her patients who often whiled away their time drawing cartoons, adding mottos and filling the books with snippets of their personality.
We have reproduced drawings and phrases from the book on The Wall in Create Café opposite the museum in Wakefield One.
