Empowering Heritage is a project taking place at the Mental Health Museum, Fieldhead, Wakefield. The Museum has a unique collection which tells the history of mental health care, starting with the opening of the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum in Wakefield in 1818.

The Empowering Heritage project is working with local groups to explore this collection and take it out into the wider community. The aim is to empower people to come together to combat mental health stigma and prejudice.

As part of the project, local groups have been looking at the samplers made by Mary Heaton when she was in the Asylum. They asked themselves a simple question: if they could sew a message to the world, what would that message be? On display are some of the messages they stitched.

Also on display are some of Mary Heaton's own, beautifully made samplers from her time in the Asylum, as well as objects relating to their creation.

All the objects are on display in Wakefield One's Atrium Cases.
