As you’re exploring the historic grounds at Pontefract Castle, don’t forget to call into the visitor centre!

This beautiful 19th century barn, once home to a blacksmith’s workshop, is now a state-of-the-art visitor centre and a central hub for the castle. Explore the castle's fascinating, turbulent history through our engaging History of Pontefract Castle displays. Little visitors will love trying on the colourful costumes in our dressing-up basket.

Pick up a guide book or a souvenir in the gift shop. We stock an excellent range mementos for your visit, as well as a delicious selection of ice creams, preserves and - of course - Pontefract Cakes!

Or why not try out some crafts in the activity zone? This light and airy space offers a range of special workshops, talks, demonstrations and activities for both adults and children at different times throughout the year.

The friendly team of volunteers are on hand with a wealth of local knowledge to help visitors make the most of their time at the castle - and the surrounding area, too.

The Visitor Centre is open daily from 11am to 3pm.
