Archaeologists are coming to dig at Pontefract Castle and you can take part! Step into the Archaeology Finds Lab and learn all about fabulous finds, amazing artefacts, and what happens to all the freshly-dug discoveries.

Come and get an incredible insight into the lives of the people who once lived at Pontefract Castle – all by getting hands-on with the artefacts they left behind thousands of years ago!

You can sign up for half a day, or a full day – whichever your prefer. Either way, this is a unique chance to handle ancient artefacts from Pontefract!

Archaeology Finds Lab Morning (10am – 12pm)

Join a morning session for a very hands-on introduction to archaeological finds. You’ll learn about all the different types of finds, what they can tell us, and the first basic steps archaeologists need to take to preserve artefacts so that they can be studied in more detail.

You’ll then get hands-on, helping the Finds Team to clean, store and quantify a freshly-dug collection of artefacts. Whether it’s bone, stone, wood, glass, or ceramic, each one needs to be preserved so that they can be studied in more detail!

Archaeology Finds Lab Afternoon (2pm – 4pm)

Join an afternoon session for a broader introduction to archaeological finds. As well as the freshly-dug discoveries, we’ll also look at other ancient artefacts from Pontefract. We’ll focus on how artefacts can be identified and analysed, and what each object can tell us about the past.

Archaeology Finds Lab Full Day! (Morning and Afternoon, 10am – 5pm)

Keen to learn as much as possible about the Pontefract’s amazing artefacts? Remember, you can book a morning session, an afternoon session, or both! You don’t need to attend one to attend the other, but by booking one of each you can have yourself a full-day Finds Lab experience! You’ll get to spend the whole day in the Finds Lab, learning how archaeologists handle the things they find, and how they figure out what they are. What a great way to spend the day!

This is a free event, but booking is essential.
