Details

Join us for this fun family workshop at Pontefract Castle as we explore the wonderful world of herbs and discover how these amazing plants have been used by people throughout history for everything from flavouring foods and mixing medicines to colouring cloth and warding off witches!

There will be lots of opportunities for discovering with your senses as we see, smell, touch and taste our way around the castle’s herb garden. And plenty of chances to roll up your sleeves and have a go at things like recreating medieval medicine recipes, colouring cloth with plant based dyes and making beautifully scented herb bags.

Everyone who comes along will also get to plant their own herb seeds to in pots so that you can carry on exploring and enjoying the wonderful world of herbs in your own home!

This workshop has been developed as a partnership between Wakefield Adult & Community Education Service and Wakefield Museums & Castles. The workshop is suitable for families with children of all ages and has been designed to provide opportunities for families to learn new information and skills whilst having fun together! Please be aware that participants will be required to complete the Wakefield Adult & Community Education Service Learner Agreement and Enrolment Form at the beginning of the workshop – time will be allotted for this. A member of the Wakefield Adult & Community Education Service Team will then give an introductory talk of about 15 minutes.

This workshop will take place at Pontefract Castle. Please proceed to the Activity Zone in the castle’s Visitor Centre when you arrive. All materials will be provided and the workshop is free of charge. Here will be the opportunity to touch, smell and taste different herbs during the workshop. If you have any dietary or health concerns (e.g. allergy concerns) related to this please contact us before booking. Spaces for this workshop are limited so booking is essential.
