Details

Step into a world of colourful nature as you stroll around Upton Country Park.

Located seven miles south of Pontefract and twelve miles south east of Wakefield, Upton Country Park consists of wetland areas with fishing ponds, woodland, scrub and grassland.

The area is important as the nearby South Elmsall Quarry is one of the UK's best examples of visible Permian stromatolite reefs (stromatolites are the remains of blue –green algae that lived in the sea).

Designated a local nature reserve in 2008, the park sits on a belt of magnesian limestone that runs from South Shields in the north to Nottingham in the south. This limestone has made the soil in the area rich with lime which produces colourful wild flowers.

Several species of orchid can be found on the site and butterflies abound and include Speckled Woods, Common Blues and Brimstones.

The rare Lesser Marsh Grasshopper can be found here and watch the sky for hovering Kestrel and singing Skylark.

Want more adventure? Let the kid’s burn off energy at the adventure playground. Many of the paths around the lake are wheelchair and pushchair friendly.

Want to know more about the area? Make sure you pop into the nearby Upton Library for more information.
