Barnsley Road,
South Elmsall,
West Yorkshire,

South Elmsall was at the forefront of change with the first purpose-built supermarket in Britain. This was Queens, the chain better known today as Asda. 70 years ago shopping was changing. Traditional shops gave personal service from assistants behind a counter, but new supermarkets revolutionised this.

Changing lifestyles drove changing shopping. Supermarkets were not just cheap, they saved time. This was especially important for the women, who did most of the shopping then, because they were also working more.

Convenience didn’t just change where we shopped but when we went, and even what we bought. As cars, freezers and microwaves became more common, many households could go to a large supermarket for one big weekly shop. At home we could save time with ready meals, but also eat new cuisines from all over the world.

Shopping is still changing today. For many people work is no longer 9-5 but the internet means we can shop online 24 hours and have it delivered.
